    Buyers restock before consumers return

Italian wine exports to the U.S. rose almost 17% in value in the third quarter. The data points to distributors rebuilding inventory, and that is when new labels win a listing.

Italian wine shipments to the U.S. grew 17% in value last quarter. The wineries that benefit most will be the ones in front of a distributor in New York this month, while the shelf is being redrawn.

On October 16, the Osservatorio of Unione Italiana Vini reported that Italian wine exports to the U.S. rose almost 17% in value and 6.6% in volume in the third quarter of 2026 compared with the same quarter of 2025, with reds up about 33% in value. UIV president Lamberto Frescobaldi cautioned that much of the rebound reflects distributors refilling warehouses rather than higher consumption, and that the year to date remains below 2025.

That caution is warranted, but the signal is still constructive when read as an importer reads it. Distributors only refill shelves they expect to sell from. Inventory cycles move ahead of consumption, so the window to secure a listing opens before retail figures improve. The quarter in which a Buyer rebuilds an assortment is the quarter in which a new label can earn a slot.

The calendar supports the point. Vinitaly.USA holds its third edition on October 26 and 27 at Pier 36 in New York, organized by Veronafiere and the Italian Trade Agency, after two editions in Chicago. The move is significant. New York concentrates importers, multi-state distributors and the premium on-trade, and its Buyer profile aligns with the price points where Italian wine already competes.

Preparation determines the outcome of a U.S. Buyer meeting. Three elements should be ready before the first conversation. A state-by-state distribution answer, because three-tier rules differ in each state and a Buyer will ask where the wine can legally move. A landed price that already includes duty, freight and margins, so the discussion starts from a realistic shelf price. And a clear plan for who services the account after the show, since a listing without follow-through rarely survives a second order.

The same logic informs the U.S. Buyer program Group FiftyOne recruits for SIGEP World in Rimini. Relationships are made in the period when Buyers are deciding, and that period precedes the recovery in consumer demand. European food and beverage companies that engage now will be positioned when it arrives.
